FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Decatur Arts Festival

Colorful. Artful. Wonderful. Walkable.

DECATUR, GA, May 27-29, 2016 – Fill Memorial Day weekend with free, fun festivities and celebrate the arts in Decatur. The downtown square comes alive with artists, continuous musical entertainment, dance, and comedy and attracts approximately 65,000
attendees over two days.

ArtWalk, Friday, May 27
Decatur’s largest one-night art experience returns with a fire twirler and stilt walker! Stroll around town to see exhibits at various shops and galleries and enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks during ArtWalk. Beer will be for sale at East Court Square including a special, limited-edition brew by Three Taverns – 3 Day IPA.

Saturday and Sunday, May 28-29
Discover new artists and festival favorites as you explore more than 150 artist booths lining Ponce de Leon and Clairemont avenues. The annual, juried market is full of high-quality artwork and attracts artists from all over the Southeast and beyond. You’ll find jewelry, paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, wood work, fiber crafts, and more.

Take an air-conditioned break from the crowds at any of the restaurants on the square or grab a bite and a beverage from the food vendors. Eat in front of the community bandstand and enjoy a full-line-up of dynamic, high-energy live stage performances. Soak up hours of bluesy licks, funky beats, classic pop, jazz, rock, smooth country, and West African rhythms that get your feet tapping. Performers include Heather Gillis Band, American Hologram, The Hannah Thomas Band, and Markey Blue.

Have a laugh at Decatur LOL; there will be improv, stand-up comedy, and an open mic to test your talent! Let the kiddos play at the Kids Festival Saturday morning at the Decatur Recreation Center.

“The Decatur Arts Alliance is honored to collaborate with artists, performers, sponsors, and volunteers to bring the Decatur Arts Festival to life each Memorial Day weekend. And every year I’m thrilled with the result! The festival captures the regional – even international – arts scene, but still feels uniquely Decatur. There’s something for everyone,” says Angie Macon, executive director of the Decatur Arts Alliance.

Hop on MARTA or your bike and ride to the festival car-lessly. Decatur has three MARTA rail stations inside its city limits, and the Decatur station is directly beneath the historic downtown square. During the festival, secure your bike at the free valet area at North McDonough Street on the square. A valet attendant remains on duty throughout the event to park and monitor bikes.

Art celebrations continue into June with the Fine Arts Exhibition at Agnes Scott College and all year long in Decatur with The Book As Art in August, The YEA! Event in September, the Decatur Wine Festival in November, and The Decatur Artway, an ongoing, rotating outdoor sculpture gallery.
